Course Content
Analysis of the different components of the structure of language. Description of models of argument: rhetoric and logic. Application of related methods in order to characterise the notions of science and democracy. Proposals fo an ethics of communication.

Learning Objectives
Knowledge of main kinds of argument in communication. Consciousness of the values underlying the choice of a kind of argument and consciousness of metaphorical models explored to argue.
Prerequisites
No presuppositions other than those needed for being a student of the course in Theories of Communication.
Teaching Methods
Lessons with final exercise (with slide shows) by the students on a topic they choose.

The course promotes the consciousness of the ways we argue and communicate any content.
Type of Assessment
A short interview of about 10 minutes for students who did the exercise: the interview concerns the topic chosen fo the exercise.An interview of about 25 minutes for students who didn't the exercise: in such case the exam will cover any topic of the course.
Course program
Analysis of syntax, semantics and pragmatics of any language. Features of human "natural" languages. Rhetoric arguments: classification. Metaphorical models used by the speaker. Scientific arguments. The role of both rhetoric and logic for the growth of democracy. The ethics of communication: basic principles. What the consciousness of argument models implies for communication.
